"California Department of Justice or CA DOJ for short is the premier testing agency for firearm safety devices in California. By law, As of January 1, 2002, no firearm may be sold, transferred, or manufactured within California unless that firearm is accompanied by a DOJ approved firearms safety device. We've taken the time to compile our top safes to meet the CA DOJ requirement in this collection. Don't live in California? It's still an excellent idea to purchase a CA DOJ Approved handgun safe as they are typically stronger that their non-tested counterparts."

So I'm sure you are wondering how does the California Department of Justice qualify a safe as California DOJ approved? Well the first step is they take a look at the locking mechanism, is it a key, electronic, biometric or other? If it's a combination locking system, there must be a minimum of 1,000 possible combinations consisting of a minimum of three numbers, letters or symbols per combination. Next, they confirm that the locking system renders the firearm inoperable while it's properly installed. Then they perform a series of tests including Picking or Manipulating Test, forced removal inspection, tensile test, shock test, shackle/cable cutting test, plug pulling test, plug torque test, sawing test and drop test. If it can pass all of these successfully it is deemed as CA DOJ approved. While these safes are not tested for comprehensive burglary protection, they do a fantastic job keeping kids out of the safe and preventing unwanted access to your handgun or pistol.
